As many as half of all alcoholics may be high-functioning types — able to live a successful life in spite of their addictions. -The New York Times.
Interesting article, but insufficient attention to terminology undercuts The NYT's credibility. Wouldn't drug user be more accurate? Not only does this adherence to received discourse reveals such biases as: continued focus on the individual 's choices while minimizing social and cultural constraints; that we could stop pretending that controlled substances and their social sanctions have very little relationship to protecting society from potential harms and more with the customs and social history of Europeans who privilege ingestion modes (drink me, don't smoke me or shoot me). But other than that, it was OK.
PS. I completely blacked-out that April was Alcohol Awareness Month. Sorry 'bout that.
